Vanderbijlpark at a glance
Vanderbijlpark is an industrial city in South Africa that enjoys prime location due to its optimal positioning on the banks of the Vaal River. It is home to over 95 000 residents and is located on the Vaal River in the Southern regions of Gauteng. Vanderbijlpark forms part of the Emfuleni municipality.
Vanderbijlpark was named after Hendrik van der Bijl, an electrical engineer and industrialist who was called back to South Africa in 1920 by the then Prime Minister Jan Smuts to give input in the planning of South Africa's industrial development. The Iron and Steel Corporation had its first plant in Pretoria and Van der Bijl oversaw the operation of this plant but with the advent of World War II, a 100 square kilometre area was bought to build a large steel works factory and town surrounding it. This factory started operating in 1947 and the town known today as Vanderbijlpark was proclaimed in 1949. The town became its own municipality in 1952 after Governor General Dr EG Jansen opened ISCOR's second steel factory. The townships of Boipatong, Bophelong, Sebokeng, Evaton and Sharpeville are situated close to the city today.
