The name origins of Tamboerskloof remain obscure, but it was initially a farm operated using slave labour. As the city expanded, the land was subdivided. The neighbourhood features steep streets lined with closely-packed Victorian-era houses, many constructed by returning soldiers from the Anglo-Boer war in 1905. Another surge in construction during the 1930s led to the emergence of numerous Art Deco apartment blocks, contributing to the area's diverse architectural character.
