In 1791 or 1792, Governor Johan Isaac Rhenius gave Tokai's land to Johannes Rauk, a colonist from Narva, Estonia. Rauk, one of the first farmers in the Dutch Cape Colony, settled there. Tokai, named after Hungary's Tokaj hills, was once filled with wine farms and smallholdings. While many wine farms are gone, some old Cape Dutch houses remain. Tokai as a suburb was established in the late 1940s to provide housing for South African soldiers returning from World War II.
