Woodstock's history: uncover the backstory

As one of Cape Town's earliest suburbs, Woodstock typically has a rich history. It was originally known as Papendorp, named after Pieter van Papendorp who lived in the area in the mid-eighteenth century. Following the inclusion of a railway line, Woodstock flourished as a small but trendy fishing village with a large beach stretching to the Castle of Good Hope.

After briefly being known as New Brighton, Woodstock received its current name at a resident's meeting. Local fishermen in attendance proposed the name in honour of their favourite watering hole, the Woodstock Hotel. Following increased industrialisation, the area experienced rapid growth in the 1800s. In recent years, major urban regeneration has improved the appearance, atmosphere, and safety of the area, including choice amenities like the popular Neighbourgoods Market.

Woodstock ensures that every step of your child's academic path is covered. Primary school options in and around the suburb include St. Agnes Primary School, Mountain Road Primary School, Holy Cross RC Primary School, Zonnebloem Boys' and Girls' Primary Schools, and Chapel Street Primary School. Children with special needs can attend the local Alpha School Primary School. For the next level, your child can enrol at Queens Park High School or Walmer Secondary School.

Innohealth Clinics Woodstock, for example, provides a range of primary, child, chronic, and mental healthcare services. For a wider range of medical attention, Groote Schuur Hospital, renowned for its medical excellence, is less than a 10-minute drive away.
