Grahamstown at a glance
Founded in 1820 by English settlers, Grahamstown is a city steeped in history, culture and scholastic excellence. Consequently, property in Grahamstown is highly desirable.
Grahamstown’s origins are well documented, and the city boasts a number of commemorative monuments to acknowledge its roots. The Botanical Gardens hosts flora indigenous to the settlers of the time, while the 1820 Settlers Monument stands in reverence to the city’s founding fathers.
The growth and the need for more accommodation in Grahamstown gave birth to Oatlands North.
Oatlands North, situated on the northern side of Oatlands proper, looks down over Grahamstown and has some lovely views. In fact, many of the houses have been architected to take advantage of the opportunity of being perched so high on the hill . It is a special privilege to be able to sit on your deck with a glass of wine in your hand and look south over the town and, with a glance to the west, enjoy the changing colours of the town with the glorious sunsets! Sometimes you have an opportunity to watch a really impressive pyrotechnic display when there is an electric storm over the city.
The houses in Oatlands North are all built post 1960 and many of the houses have followed more modern designs than are usually associated with this Settler city. Because the suburb is on a hillside, many of the Oatlands North properties are split-level with terraced gardens. Oatlands North has a large selection of freehold properties from conservative 3 bedroom starter homes to luxurious mansions.
More recently, Kingswood College sold off a large slice of land that was under-utilized. It was bought by a visionary developer and large developments have since mushroomed up in the area where one can find luxury accommodation, as in the case of Kings View Estate, or 2 bedroom duplexes in Kings Gardens. It doesn't stop there as there is Kings Manor and now Kings Terrace all of which provide slightly different accommodation. Kings Gardens is mainly populated by Rhodes students who seem very happy there.
Oatlands North boasts the city's only Hindu temple and many of the city's Hindu residents live close to the Mosque. Oatlands North is on the door step of Graham College and is also close to Kingswood College.
Fortunately in Grahamstown one can walk into town without too much effort from most locations. Oatlands North is situated approximately 3 kilometers out of town so a fair walk awaits you!
