The town was established by the Searle family from Surrey, England. The elder brother, Richard, who had originally worked as a labourer, emigrated to South Africa in 1845 under a government-sponsored scheme. He arrived in Groot Brakrivier in 1850 to join the Central Road Board. In 1859, Richard's brother, Charles, and his wife, Pamela, are credited with founding the village. The Searle family later became toll keepers, as toll houses were managed by private contractors during the 1800s. They also played a key role in establishing various businesses in the village, including shops, accommodations, a shoemaking venture, and timber enterprises.
