In 1834, Thomas Henry Duthie purchased the farm named Belvidere from his father-in-law, George Rex, affectionately known as the "squire and proprietor of Knysna," who had acquired the land in 1830. Duthie and his wife Caroline, Rex's daughter whom he married in 1833, settled on the farm and erected the now-iconic Belvidere Manor. The estate remained in the Duthie family until it was sold in 1985 for development purposes. Belvidere House holds the distinction of being a proclaimed National Monument and serves as the focal point of the Estate, which has since evolved into a thriving and beloved suburb of Knysna.
