Richards Bay at a glance

Richards Bay is a harbour town in KwaZulu-Natal’s Zululand, situated just 1 hour and 45 minutes from Durban Central. It houses one of the country's largest harbours and is the largest coal export facility in the world. The town started off as a makeshift harbour in 1879 and today it is a fully functional deep water harbour. 

It is Zululand’s biggest and wealthiest city and this can be seen in its bustling residential market defined by a growing demand for townhouses, simplexes, duplexes and freestanding homes. This demand is a direct result of a growing professional class who are moving into the town for employment purposes.

Richards Bay has the most breath-taking beaches and wetlands in KZN’s north coast, and this attracts many tourists to its shores.

Alkantstrand Beach

Alkantsrand Beach is popular amongst the locals who enjoy soaking up warm waves, compliments of the Indian Ocean. Richards Bay Country Club

Richards Bay Country Club promotes sport and recreation in the area and strives for good sportsmanship and fellowship in the club. Facilities are available to those who have attained a membership, as well as walk-ins.  The club is situated on a beautiful landscape, designed by Gary Player, along the shores of Lake Mzingazi. It is considered one of the most challenging layouts in Zululand. The Zululand Birding Route

‘Spectacular’ is one of the many words used to describe The Zululand Birding Route that is home to a total of 605 bird species, including Green Barbet; Pel’s Fishing Owl; Pink-Throated Twinspot; Neergard’s Sunbird and Palmnut Vulture. Richard’s Bay is one of South Africa’s leading water-bird areas, and as such, it is ideal for rarity bird sightings of Crab Plover and Broadbilled Sandpiper, especially in the summer months. Spread-out across the birding route are open lakes that are home to waterfowl, hippos and crocodiles, allowing visitors the opportunity to catch a glimpse of these wild animals. The route also includes Richards Bay Harbour and Enseleni Nature Reserve.

Enseleni Nature Reserve

Consisting of scenic coastal grasslands and forest, Enseleni Nature Reserve is the perfect location for family picnics, surrounded by rare birds and game species.

Visitors will be able to spot the African Finfoot; Purple Crested Lourie and Nightjars, and wildebeest including Zebra, Impala, Bushbaby and Wildebeest.
