While there isn't much direct evidence left in Wilderness, remnants like shell middens, caves, and ancient rock art tell its stories. More than a hundred years after the Dutch settlement at the Cape in 1652, the area began to take shape. In 1877, George Bennet of Liverpool purchased a plot of land at the mouth of the Touw River. The farm was named "The Wilderness". Over the years, George Bennet and his wife developed the area.Â
