Discover the ultimate taste of Mozambique at Jonny's in Fourways

Category Property News

"For the best taste of Mozambique this side of Ponto da Ouro, head to Jonny's in Dainfern." This was the advice given to a new Fourways resident by a friend, and better advice has seldom been dispensed by anyone who calls Fourways home. Whether you're looking for a quiet meal with the family or a place to cheer on your team during a rugby clash, the Jonny's vibe has you covered. Lew Geffen Sotheby's International Realty, the best real estate company in South Africa, takes a look at why Jonny's has become a local Fourways legend and we've broken it down to five unforgettable factors:

1.       Mozambican cuisine is simply legendary

Mozambican cuisine is characterised by various mouthwatering flavours. Think lemon, chilli, garlic, coconut and nutty notes. With the Indian Ocean crashing along its coast, Mozambican cuisine often includes seafood, and must-try dishes include - among many others - trinchado, espetada and traditionally prepared prawns. Trinchado is tender strips of beef cooked in a tomato and onion-based sauce, with hints of peri-peri, garlic and red wine.

Jonny's espetada consists of 300g matured rump cubes on a skewer, interspersed with peppers and onions. In keeping with tradition, the meat is rolled in salt, garlic and bay leaves before being flame-grilled to melt in your mouth. If you're in the mood for prawns when you head to Jonny's, you've got plenty of options, including a 500g prawn platter, butterflied queen prawns, prawn curry or prawn linguine.

2.       Variety is the spice of life - and of Mozambican food

One of the things we love most about Jonny's is that there's something to tantalise every tastebud. The menu caters for meat lovers, those who prefer chicken, seafood aficionados and followers of the plant-based lifestyle. For those keen to delve beyond the world of Mozambican cuisine, the "Mel's Asian Delights" section of the menu is just for you - and we can't recommend the Korean Crunch chicken highly enough. The cherry on top when it comes to this delicious cuisine is the generous portion sizes - you won't be going home hungry after dinner at Jonny's.

3.       Function platters you won't soon forget

If you're planning to host a function, you should know that Jonny's offers delectable platter menus, reasonably priced from just R275 per platter. Depending on which platter you choose, your meal will consist of one to three courses. Starters include traditional Mozambican delicacies like chorizo, deep-fried prawns and chicken livers, while main courses include deboned baby chicken, fillet, kingklip, trinchado and more. When it comes to the desserts, don't miss out on the traditional European churros and Portuguese custard tarts.

4.       Weekly specials to make your mouth water

Head over to Jonny's Facebook page and you'll find the current week's specials among the tastebud-tantalising posts. A few examples include clam chowder (what could be better on a cold wintry day?), fillet on the bone and an exotic choice like prawn and pine nut salmon.

5.       A vibrant, friendly ambience and simple-but-spectacular food

Various Google reviews describe Jonny's as "a good evening out", "superb food and service" and "friendly staff and pleasant atmosphere". According to their website, Jonny's aims to provide "great food and excellent service in a comfortable environment" and according to the reviews, they're knocking it out of the park. In the opinion of one Facebook reviewer, Jonny's has "literally the best food". Having sampled the cuisine ourselves, we couldn't agree more. It's little wonder the place has been described as the best restaurant in town.
