Prime Real Estate in the Vaal Dam

Category Property News

Vaal Dam is located some one hour south of Johannesburg, 20 minutes from the city of Vereeniging, and is the main source of water for Johannesburg and surrounding towns and cities.  The Vaal Dam has a shore line of 800 kilometers and is bordered by three provinces, Gauteng, Free State and Mpumalanga.  The source of the Vaal Dam is primarily the Vaal River and the Wilge River.

There are three towns on the banks of the Vaal Dam, all providing power boating, yachting, shore fishing, all sorts of water sports and accommodation, namely Deneysville, Oranjeville and Vaalmarina.

Deneysville was once the town for the ‘rich and famous’ - many people who love the water world would have holiday homes here.  Deneysville has 3 main marinas and is particularly known for yachting.  In 2007, the world Guinness record was set in Deneysville, for the most yachts to finish an inland race, established in the Round the Island Yacht race, which is still run annually in February.  Deneysville is a thriving small town within close proximity to Vereeniging, Vanderbijlpark and Sasolburg.

Oranjeville is a much smaller town usually associated with being on the banks of the Vaal Dam.  However, it is actually on the banks of the Wilge River which flows into the Vaal Dam.  Oranjeville is not as popular as the other two towns due to its distance and accessibility from Johannesburg.

Vaalmarina is a town established around a large marina as the focal point.  Vaalmarina is a residential town but due to its locality was a slow developing town.  During the very early 1990’s, a property developer bought up large tracts of land next to Vaalmarina, developed many large (8 ha plus) erven and then developed townhouse type complexes.  Some bigger parcels of land were sold to other developers who developed small townships such as Harbour Town, featuring its own harbour and a 9-hole golf course. Vaalmarina as a holiday township has become the new playground of the ‘rich and famous’.

Besides these three towns providing permanent residential properties and basic commercial facilities, the area has many other residential developments for investment or vacation purposes on its banks, such as ‘The Peninsula’.

The outflow from the Vaal Dam is into the Vaal River flowing past the immediate cities of Vereeniging and Vanderbijlpark, as the boundary between the Free State and Gauteng.
