The brief was to design a three-bedroom home. The pyjama lounge off which the bedrooms are located has the element many dream of with spectacular un-interrupted views northwards towards the Magaliesburg mountains.
The main bedroom too captures the views northwards and has a patio which puts you in the middle of the tranquility of the site and its location to nature with the mountain directly behind and the stream flowing through. With en-suite bathroom and a generous dressing room. The second and third bedrooms can be opened up to form one very large room if required. The second bathroom adjacent to these rooms is a full bathroom again elegantly detailed.
The home had to have a kitchen centrally located, with service areas of a scullery and pantry.
The dining and living room are in an open-plan format, with a lounge that opens up to a covered patio entertainment area – all flowing out onto the garden. Alongside this the natural stream that adds to the tranquility of the garden and also supplies water to the Jojo tank for irrigation all year around. Adding to the appeal of the home is the double garage with dimensions larger than normal.

During the initial planning phase, the architect looked at case studies of eco homes designed in the Arizona desert. These designs looked at passive green systems, which created wonderful and comfortable living spaces. In these designs, what stood out was the incredible attention to movement and light within these spaces, and this is what defined the DNA from which this home was created. This strong basis on which the design was founded clearly shows that each and every square metre has been thought out, eliminating any unnecessary wasted space.
The home is oriented to have all service areas on the south side with close accessibility to the street, which then allows maximum exposure of living areas to the north. The house is basically two rectangular pavilions joined in the middle with kitchen on the ground floor and the pyjama lounge on the first floor which removes the need for any passages. The eastern rectangular pavilion includes the double volume entrance hall with an exciting experience of light and views, this houses the staircase and an internal deck above for the study. This wind was stretched out longer to trace the sun’s path through the sky and capture the incredible African sunset to the west. Onto this wing a future extension was envisaged and pre-planned to be able to then add an additional double garage and store room at basement level, further living areas on the ground floor and an additional two bedrooms above on the first floor. There is also the ability to extend the dining room or include a servant’s quarter as the ground work of the foundation is in place with services. The house has large windows and doors and during the summer months when the sun is at a higher angle, the use of architectural elements of slab overhangs and balconies. provide the sun shading to the house thus keeping it cool. In the winter months the sun then tracks at a lower angle thus then allowing deeper penetration into the house to keep a nice cosy environment.

No contemporary home is complete without energy saving properties – and this home is no exception. Improving energy saving properties are the windows and doors that were supplied by Teva. These are made from highly insulating uPVC and the glass is a 6,35mm laminated type with tilt and turn mechanisms; when both are put together they make for superior energy efficiency.
Other features that make this home eco-friendly include LED lighting throughout. Under the floor slab is EPS polystyrene insulation and in the ceilings is a carefully specified insulation system which utilizes a 135mm Knauf insulation coupled with thicker ceiling boards. This provides the home to be a cocoon when required in the colder winter months and in the summer cooler retreat. The house is constructed from clay stock bricks sourced from a local brick yard; sand used for building and plastering purposes was sourced from a nearby quarry; and the cement used was also ordered from a nearby manufacturer – all within 50km, therefore reducing the overall carbon footprint even more. Enhancing the contemporary architectural style of the structure are the natural finishes that were used throughout the home.
Blending with the country style of the estate, the dwelling uses natural earth tones and materials with different textures. Natural stone cladding adorns the architectural features around the house. In the interior, the earth tones follow through and the tiling extends to meet this language.
